About the class
Explore five contemporary poetic possibilities at your own pace.
This recorded workshop expands on the ideas introduced in our free Start Here guide, offering deeper conversations, additional examples, and guided writing exercises designed to help you put each form into practice. Whether you're discovering these forms for the first time or revisiting them with fresh eyes, this independent study invites you to slow down, experiment, and continue building your writing practice.
What Is Independent Study?
Independent Study is The Poetry Lab’s self-paced workshop format.
Each Independent Study is a complete BrainTrust class delivered through a structured digital classroom, designed for writers who prefer to move at their own pace. You receive the full workshop recording, slide deck, and guided writing prompts — all organized in a clean, intuitive Notion workspace.
This is not just a clip or a downloadable PDF. It’s a full-length workshop experience, preserved and thoughtfully arranged for independent learning.
Independent Study is ideal for writers who want to:
Pause and reflect without time pressure
Revisit sections as their work evolves
Access craft instruction on their own schedule
Purchase once. Return whenever you need.
Please Note
This Independent Study includes lifetime access to the recorded workshop and materials. It does not include access to a live BrainTrust session.
Because access is granted immediately upon purchase, refunds are available within 2 hours of purchase only.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
This workshop was originally presented as a special event for National Poetry Month in 2024. To celebrate the many possibilities of contemporary poetry, four teaching artists from The Poetry Lab came together to each lead a different section of the workshop, sharing the poetic forms, writers, and creative practices that inspire their own work. The result is a collaborative learning experience that brings together multiple teaching voices while remaining grounded in The Poetry Lab's shared commitment to helping writers keep writing.
