A painting can be the beginning of a poem.
A mysterious figure. An unexpected color. A small detail you can’t stop looking at. Visual art offers countless ways into a poem, inviting us to follow our curiosity and see where language takes us.
Ekphrastic poetry is poetry inspired by visual art, and its possibilities reach far beyond describing what we see. A poem might imagine what happened before the scene, borrow a painting’s atmosphere, investigate an artist’s story, or follow a personal association somewhere entirely unexpected.
Join Lorette C. Luzajic, founding editor of The Ekphrastic Review, for four weeks of looking closely and writing adventurously. Through art, poetry, discussion, and guided exercises, you’ll explore the history of ekphrasis, experiment with different approaches, and strengthen the craft that brings your poems alive.

and continues November 22, November 29, and December 6
All sessions are live via Zoom from 1:00pm 3:00pm PT
All Classes will be recorded!
What’s it like in class? This is not a passive Zoom seminar or a pre-recorded lecture. Our classes are live, interactive, and community-centered, with a real instructor and real writers gathering together each week to create, discuss, and explore poetry in real time.
Students are encouraged to ask questions, participate in discussion, share work, and engage with the material at whatever level feels comfortable to them. The atmosphere is supportive, thoughtful, and creatively energized. You do not need to have all the answers before arriving. You just need curiosity, openness, and a willingness to write.
Lorette C. Luzajic is the founding editor of The Ekphrastic Review, the flagship journal of ekphrastic literature.
Her ekphrastic poetry and flash fiction has been published in hundreds of journals and a dozen anthologies, widely nominated, taught in workshops from Tennessee to Egypt, translated into Urdu, Spanish, and Arabic, and twice honoured in Best Small Fictions anthologies.
