Your Poetry Horoscope for 2023

Astrology: the language of the stars, guidance from the heavens. I like to think of it as the universe’s way of writing poetry. Whether you believe in it or not, it can be a treasure trove of poetic inspiration if you let it.

Like every year, this one will have shifts and plot twists. A new year gives us all an opportunity to hit the refresh button. These celestial switches will affect us all differently. Here are the major transits we can expect this year:

  • March 7 - Saturn moves into Pisces - Saturn has been rolling through the signs it rules, Capricorn and Aquarius, since 2017. There, it has been at home, able to be the boundary boss it wants to be. In March, it will begin its two year journey through the mystical, watery sign of Pisces, bringing structure to our art, ethereal endeavors, and creative pursuits.

  • March 23 - Pluto moves into Aquarius - Although Pluto’s stay in Aquarius this year is a quick one, only three months, it’s kind of a big deal. Pluto is always about power and metamorphosis. It hasn’t been in Aquarius since the 1700s and its saunter through the sign will take two decades to complete. Aquarius is the zodiac’s progressive innovator. This year gives us a preview of how Pluto will revolutionize us collectively and individually. In lore, Pluto is the lord of the underworld, death and transformation are its favorite things. Come spring there may be some heavy subject matter to filter through, perhaps fueling a philosophical or melancholy note to our poetry. Just remember alchemy is about breaking down to come together. If we trust the process we may end up with something golden.

  • May 16 - Jupiter moves into Taurus - Jupiter is the resident fairy godmother of the planets, wherever it goes it sprinkles blessings of abundance. In May it moves into fertile, luxurious Taurus. We can expect to be delighted by pleasures of the senses and lean into practicality. This is ultimate cozy vibes.

  • July 17 - Nodes move into Aries and Libra - The nodes aren’t planets, they are powerful points in the sky linked to eclipse seasons. In the astrology world, eclipses demand respect. They come with a whiff of danger and destiny. Don’t be scared, just approach with caution. The North Node, the future and what we hunger for, shifts into bold, independent Aries while the South Node, the past and what we need to release or balance, enters Libra, a sign known for its diplomatic partnership. We can expect to receive lessons on where we blaze our own path and how we work together.

  • July 22 - September 3 - Venus Retrograde - Venus doesn’t go retrograde as often as Mercury, but that doesn't mean it’s any less important. The planet of love, harmony and what we value is pressing pause this summer in the sign of Leo. When Venus is in Leo our love is big, proud and in the spotlight. Venus’ dance will likely have us reflecting on how we define our relationships and what we desire from them.

2023 has an artsy, deep and progressive flavor to it. Skip ahead to your rising sign to see what that means for you and your poetry!

Note: If you don’t know your rising sign, these can also be applied to your sun sign. The sun is our purpose and vitality, we could interpret these horoscopes as if your sun sign represents your 1st house.

This is a year of expansion! You start the year with Jupiter in Aries, and it doesn’t leave until May 15th. Jupiter in your 1st house of the self is blessing you - big time. Known as the sage, Jupiter is a great teacher and may nudge you to take some classes or a writing workshop. April 19th brings you a total solar eclipse in your 1st house, asking you to examine your relationships. Are you leaning into people who fill your cup? Eclipses encourage expansion but require the release of something. Keeping track of your daily intentions might help you pinpoint what you need to let go of. Aries, you are being encouraged to make yourself the main character this year. If you feel that inkling to take a workshop or hone your craft, do it! The cosmos are here to support your growth, courage and bold decisions this year.

TAURUS

Currently, Jupiter is cruising through your Aries 12th house of dreams and hidden life, so if your poetry is feeling more emo than usual that could be why. Your blessings get a rebirth in May when Jupiter moves into Taurus, your 1st house, and shines on your purpose, talents and desires. In October, the final eclipse in the Taurus-Scorpio series lands in your 1st house. Likely these eclipses over the last year and a half have reformed your relationships and had you revising how you treat yourself and how you move in committed partnerships. What you want is at the forefront this year, Taurus. Taking time to journal could unlock poetry itself. Your desires are on the universe’s to do list so manifest through your writing, dream big on the page!

Gemini

The beginning of this year is the perfect time to ponder how you have been grappling with anger, yours or anyone else’s, with your writing. Mars, the planet of war and action, has been traipsing through your 1st house of self since August 2022 and won’t leave until March. It might be helpful to use your poetry to reflect on any lessons you learned when Mars was retrograde from October 30-January 12 this year. If anything, it’s a great excuse to get the rage on the page. After March 25th you will breathe easier and be calibrated back to your bubbly, airy self. On March 7th, Saturn releases your 9th house of education and philosophy and enters your 10th house of career and ambitions. Saturn is a serious, organized planet, but in mystical Pisces it doesn’t do discipline as intensely as it may want to. Exploring your writing through prose poems is just the kind of structureless structure Saturn moving into Pisces might make you crave.

Cancer

Until May 15, jovial Jupiter is infusing your 10th house of career and public life. Jupiter is also known as the expander, so the workload could be a little heavier, but rest assured Jupiter blesses whatever it touches. Then it moves into your 11th house of friendship and community. The lucky planet moving through your house of luck? What a dream! Jupiter in Taurus is a lovely time for you to join group workshops and book clubs, anywhere you can collaborate with friends. You and your writing will thrive in community. The 11th house is also associated with the internet, so if you have been considering sharing your works online, the stars are on your side with Jupiter in Taurus. On July 17th the nodes of destiny shift into Aries and Libra. With the North Node’s eager influence entering your 10th house, you may be considering reaching for more recognition in your career.

Come spring there may be some heavy subject matter to filter through, perhaps fueling a philosophical or melancholy note to our poetry. Just remember alchemy is about breaking down to come together. If we trust the process we may end up with something golden.

leo

Leo, you’re always a star, but this year feels extra, even for you. You start the year with Jupiter in Aries in the 9th house. Among other things, the 9th house rules over publication. Jupiter is blessing the work you put out into the world, take advantage! Then it moves into your Taurus 10th house of career and public roles, making you highly visible for the rest of the year. If poetry is part of your career, or maybe you want it to be, being consistent in your practice will be a game changer as Jupiter in Taurus loves consistency. Pluto moves into Aquarius, your 7th house of partnerships will be reformed for three months starting March 23rd and it will stay there for twenty years beginning 2024. Pluto will be previewing what it will transform next year. It could feel heavy but also purifying as Pluto’s end goal is always to renew. Venus retrograding through your 1st house will be another transformational shift for you. From July 22nd - September 3rd Venus will have you rethinking on what parts of yourself you’ve outgrown and reflecting on what parts you may want to take back.

virgo

You’re no stranger to structure, so on March 7th, when Saturn, the planet of discipline moves into Pisces, you will most likely take it in stride. Boundaries are entering your 7th house of relationships. Write haiku for the ones you love, maybe you will discover something beautiful about the way boundaries can change relationships for the better. On March 23rd when Pluto moves into Aquarius, you’re getting an invitation to listen to your body’s needs and a preview of what Pluto will be transforming for the next twenty years starting in 2024. For three months it will dip into your 6th house of work and health asking you to ruminate on how your health and work habits go hand in hand. In May, Jupiter will provide an uplifting energy in your 9th house of higher education and may have you yearning for learning. Summertime writing workshops could slake the philosophical thirst.

LIBRA

Jupiter in Aries has you celebrating your committed partnerships until May 15th. The 7th house is dedicated to the relationships we choose. Jupiter wants to celebrate it all while it’s there. All the joy and all the balance between the self and the other. When Pluto moves into Aquarius in March, it’s previewing a greater change to come. Starting 2024, Pluto in Aquarius will revamp your 5th house of pleasure, creativity and self-expression. During its three month stay this year, if you feel yourself drawn toward different places for inspiration, it could be Pluto’s transformative powers. Write about whatever is making you feel excited, follow your joy and keep an open mind. On July 17th, the nodes of destiny move from the Scorpio-Taurus axis into Aries and Libra. The South Node will transit your 1st house of self for the rest of the year, encouraging you to let go of patterns that don’t resonate anymore.

scorpio

Scorpio, we know you actually want all the love, even when you’re brooding. Good news! Jupiter entering Taurus in your 7th house in May will be livening your relationships with love, blessing your life partners and business partners. Jupiter is also known as the sage, here it teaches you how to strengthen your bonds for the better. In March, your 4th house of home, family, and foundation is getting a transformative makeover. Pluto will be there for three months to preview the ways in which your family patterns may shift or change in the next twenty years starting in 2024. Also of note, the 4th house is associated with cancer and the moon, and poets LOVE the moon. Moon poetry anybody?

Sagittarius

With Jupiter in your Aries 5th house until May 15th, you’re creating for the first half of the year. Wherever the muses take you, follow and your chart ruler Jupiter will bless your art and self-expression. On March 7th, Saturn enters your 4th house where it wants you to get serious about your boundaries around home and family. The 4th house is associated with legacy and protection. Saturn visiting this area of your life for the next two years will have you examining familial patterns that don’t protect your heart and encourage you to double check your foundations. In July, when the nodes move, you’re moving too. (But let’s be honest, no matter what the cosmos are doing, you’re always moving in all directions) The North Node enters your Aries 5th house and you’re going to feel it. North Node - more, 5th house - fun! Aries is bold, impulsive and true to self, so don’t be afraid to go for what makes you laugh and feel happy to be alive.

Capricorn

Capricorns always do their own thing, and with Jupiter in your Aries 4th house until May, when you do your own thing at home - Jupiter has got your back. Then, on the 16th, it moves into your 5th house of Taurus. The 5th house is our good times and pleasure and Taurus is a sensual, earthy area of our lives. If anything, exploring your senses through poetry will lead you to some incredible discoveries about your writing and yourself. When Jupiter transits the 5th house, it’s a time for creation and fertility. What do you want to bring forth into this world? March 23rd Pluto enters Aquarius in your 2nd house of self-worth and resources. Pluto the transformer will preview this change for 3 months before it stays there for twenty years in 2024. You may feel called to invest in yourself, take time to hone the skills that help you being in money. Pluto breaks down to rebuild and is always concerned with our personal and collective power. Feel it out this spring, your natural talents and assets are worth investing in.

Venus doesn’t go retrograde as often as Mercury, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less important. The planet of love, harmony and what we value is pressing pause this summer in the sign of Leo.

Aquarius

No one thinks like you do, Aquarius, and Pluto transiting your 1st house of self will make that very clear. Pluto’s 3-month stay in your 1st house this year will preview a major shift in your life that will begin to play out in 2024 and last twenty years. Lean into the rebirth, release your wildest ideas onto the page. The world will be captivated and catch up soon. Jupiter is blessing your home and family starting May 16th. We sometimes overlook this area of our chart, but the 4th house provides us with protection and comfort. Brainstorming your foundations and steeping yourself in gratitude could lead to some pretty impressive pieces of poetry. Who isn't grateful for a hot cup of coffee or tea? On July 22nd, Venus, the planet of what we love and what we value, is going retrograde in your 7th house of committed partnerships. It’s okay so sit still and let things simmer while Venus slow dances through this transit. You’re being blessed with time to rethink your bonds and value yourself above all else. If it feels stale or sticky, writing odes to the things you love could help you feel unstuck this summer.

Pisces symbol on lime background

Pisces

Starting March 7th, Saturn moving through your 1st house of self for a couple years isn't the worst thing, Pisces. Saturn restricts, so you may feel confined as karmic daddy Saturn refines how you show up to the world, but Saturn doesn't do anything without a plan or purpose. As you move through this transit, you will find a refreshed sense of inner authority. If you feel like the world is giving you too many “no’s”, exploring erasure poems could help you even the odds and tame the frustration. In March, Pluto moves into your Aquarius 12th house to empower your healing. The 12th house is loss, wounds, dreams and hidden life. Your Piscean, ethereal nature will aid you in cleansing old wounds and starting new cycles. Keeping a dream journal will give your poetry lots of raw material to work with while Pluto dips into your 12th house for 3 months this year.
