"Conventional wisdom holds that art and science are mutually exclusive. Leah Noble Davidson disagrees. Consider the laboratory of the human endeavor: The absolute magnitude of love. The combustion of passion. The gravity of pain." - Google Books
Tonight we will be exploring the "golden shovel" both in the form of poems and a book length collection of poetry. Mastered by Terrance Hayes, the golden shovel is a constraint that uses a source text as a guide for the content, whether lines of poetry or whole poems, that follow. We will look to Leah Noble Davidson's Poetic Scientifica as a book-length example of this and Terrance Hayes' "The Golden Shovel" as example of a single poem that follows the structure. Prompts will be given!
While you don't have to read Poetic Scientifica or Lighthead in advance, we do recommend both book and would love to hear your thoughts. Consider adding these titles to your 2016 reading list!
